About us

Transplant Sport Ireland

TSI continues a long tradition of transplant sport in Ireland as started by the Irish Kidney Association over 30 years ago. Irish transplant teams have a strong track record over the years in participation in World, European and British transplant games and have repeatedly punched above our weight, returning time after time with multiple gold, silver and bronze medals and countless stories of friendship and experiences abroad. More importantly, our teams and individuals have given Ireland a wonderful reputation abroad of fair-play and being friendly, supportive and fun-loving as well as good at our sports.
This doesn’t happen by accident – it is because of how we have organised ourselves over the years.

More recently, in 2024, TSI took over as the Governing Body for Transplant Sport in Ireland and one of our many aims is to continue building a community of transplanted and dialysis patients, supporters and volunteers who can encourage us all to meet each other and take part in events from domestic get-
togethers all the way to the World Transplant Games, and everything in between.

We are all linked by our transplant and/or dialysis experiences and can give so much hope to those who are newly diagnosed through our ongoing celebration of life through sport. There is also no better way to honour our donors – without them we would not be here.

This website, expertly put together by our Media Team will be the reference point for all TSI information and activity for existing members in addition to those interested in joining us at some point in the future.

We are delighted to have you join as members of TSI and wish you all the very best in your continued recovery or ongoing treatment. Together we will support and encourage each other to participate in events we might not have ever dreamed possible for us, in places we might not ever have dreamed of visiting.

Happy dreaming!

Transplant Sport Ireland (TSI) is a volunteer-run organisation where transplant recipients, and people on dialysis, can connect and support one another in a common belief that sport plays a vital part in maintaining good health.

Transplant Sport Ireland aims to encourage transplant recipients & people on dialysis to lead an active lifestyle, thereby celebrating the gift of life through sport.

Most importantly, Transplant Sport Ireland is also dedicated to raising awareness of the importance of Organ Donation and continuing to remember and appreciate organ donors and their families.

Organ donors save lives. At any one time in Ireland there are between 550 and 600 people active on waiting lists for organ transplants including heart, lung, liver, bone marrow, kidney, and pancreas. Making friends and family aware of your wishes on organ donation is the key step towards saving lives – TSI encourages everyone to……

A word from our Manager

Transplant Sport Ireland

My name is Harry Ward and I am the Team Manager of Transplant Sport Ireland. It is indeed a great honour for me to lead the Irish Transplant Sport team to the various competitions being held around the world. I myself had a Kidney Transplant in 2007 having been on dialysis for over 3 years. After my transplant, my quality of life improved enormously and I remember my donor every day of my life – I am so grateful for this second chance.

Having been on dialysis myself, I know what a challenging journey it can be. Being part of Transplant Sport Ireland will help you meet others on a similar journey and all will support you along the way. We also welcome people on pre Dialysis to our Trainings/Meet Up days.

Transplant Sport Ireland is the governing body for transplant sport in Ireland having recently taken over this role from the Irish Kidney Association, with whom we still collaborate for some events. TSI is a volunteer run organisation, led by the athletes themselves. We all work hard to make it a successful sporting group and I thank all those on the TSI committee and those on our subcommittees for their time, dedication, hard work and commitment. I’d also like to thank James Nolan and PKRF for their ongoing support over the years.

As well as the World Games in Dresden in August 2025, we also have a Team heading to represent Ireland at the British Games in Oxford in late July/early August and The first ever European Football Championship takes place in Oxford in April so as you can see, it is a very exciting time for Transplant Sport in Ireland.
I cannot recommend it highly enough. It allows us to meet people on similar journeys to ourselves and there are all remarkable stories of triumph over adversity. You meet people of all ages, of all sporting abilities who compete – all there to honour their donors. What we are all here for is to promote Organ Donation and show how successful it is. All competitions show a real celebration of life through sport.

I urge everyone to Have the Conversation – Say ‘Yes’ to Organ Donation! I have made extraordinary friends in my roles as an athlete, Team Captain and now as Team Manager. TSI is like an
extended family – we look out for each other, support each
other and celebrate our success but most of all we celebrate the great gift of life together. Follow us in social media or on our website to see details of our Training/Meet Up days. We look forward to welcome you to Transplant Sport Ireland! 🇮🇪
